Pass along: Why Women Lie

April 4, 2009

Passing along a fascinating podcast:

Susan Shapiro Barash on her book “Why Women Lie.”

Speaking as someone who blogs under an assumed name in order to feel she can tell the truth about her life, I found this revealing, to say the least. I’ll admit it, I’m a champion liar. Until I’m not. And yes, like many of the women talked about in the interview, I feel like I’ve been pushed into situations where I have to lie to protect myself.  And, like many of the women in the interview, I’ve arranged my life to accommodate my need to lie about things (how else can you explain over a decade in hospitality?)

For me, the biggest trap is lying about needing help. And I get fucked up about it. If my mind had its way, the list of things I would rather do before admitting that I needed help would include lying, stealing, cheating, running away and permanently severing personal relationships. (Please note, murder’s not on the list mostly because of my inherent laziness, not because  I actually have enough moral fiber to draw the line there.)

This is another stage that feminism has to go through. We have to admit our faults, and we have to deal with them. Honestly, though, my initial reaction on hearing this interview was, “You mean it’s not just me?” Give it a listen.

Weird stuff on the internet, who knew?

So, what’s the weirdest thing YOU’VE seen on the internet today?

January 23, 2009

For me, it was this:

If Blizzard truly respects the rights of gamers and of people worldwide, they would remove this offensive line of text and come to grips with the damage they have done. I, for one, find it hard to believe that such a ‘respected’ gaming company could stoop so low as to input subliminal messages of hate, degradation, and depravity in their games.

I have no idea if this was meant seriously or not. I am disturbed that the inclusion of the line “a concerned Christian” makes the whole thing more plausible to me. I know FAR too many intelligent and reasonable Christians to let my brain fall into that trap. But still, read it. I want YOUR eyebrows to slam together like mine did.

Second, and this counts for either yesterday, or the day before (it’s so hard to figure that out when your on a third shift schedule) AN IMPORTANT RECALL NOTICE:

Please contact recall@iheartguts.com for information on how to return your uterus for a refund or exchange for any other organ or opt-out via email if the uterus is not accessible to children.

Passing it along

September 28, 2008

Interesting post from Tor.com’s blog, written by Kathryn Cramer (writer, critic, and anthologist presently co-editing the Year’s Best Fantasy and Year’s Best SF series with her husband David G. Hartwell.)

OK, so it basically boils down to “we’re seeing a lot of dark fiction because we’ve been in the middle of a frikken war for half a decade now,” but it’s still interesting reading.
